Home Gym Q&A

Here you can find answers to frequently asked questions from our customers in Q&A format.
We hope this helps resolve any concerns or questions about our products and services.

Using a popular power rack set as an example, a space of 6 tatami mats (approx. 3.64m × 2.73m) is generally sufficient. Many customers who consult with Fitness Shop install their home gym in a room of around this size. Even in a 4.5-tatami room (approx. 2.73m × 2.73m), installation is possible, although it may feel a little tight. If you plan to use a barbell, you also need to consider the bar length and space for changing plates. Since barbells are often around 220cm long, you typically need a width of about 280–300cm including plate-changing space.

This is one of the most common questions we receive about home gyms, and in most cases there is no need to worry. Under current Japanese building standards, the minimum long-term floor load is set at 180kg per square meter. For example, if a 6-tatami room is approximately 9.72㎡, the room as a whole should support at least about 1,750kg. Therefore, even if the total machine weight exceeds 500kg, the room as a whole can typically handle it without issue. However, if the weight is concentrated far from structural supports, or if the building is old or has defects, you may still want to consult a specialist if you are concerned.

This depends greatly on your living environment. For example, if you live on the second floor or above in an apartment building and need to consider noise for neighbors downstairs, you may use a layered structure with a soft mat, plywood, and then joint mats on top. On the other hand, if you live in a detached house and do not need to worry much about noise, a single firm rubber mat is often sufficient. In other words, the ideal setup depends on your environment and what you need to consider. One thing we can say is that a three-layer structure is not always necessary, and in many cases a single rubber mat is enough.

Noise can be reduced by choosing quieter equipment and adjusting your training methods. For example, you can choose rubber plates instead of iron plates, or use a fitness bike instead of a treadmill. You can also reduce noise by avoiding deadlifts from the floor or by returning the barbell quietly after each set.

Yes. Many customers living in apartment buildings have successfully installed full home gyms. By choosing quieter equipment and adjusting training methods, it is usually possible to use a home gym without major issues.

Many people in Japan do not have the luxury of a large training space at home. In that case, we recommend a combination of adjustable dumbbells and an adjustable bench. With this setup, even about one tatami mat of space can be enough for effective home training. Even if you feel you do not have enough room, it may still be worth considering. A routine of training hard at the gym on weekends and doing dumbbell training at home on weekdays can also work very well.

No advanced maintenance work is required. For home-use machines, general upkeep such as retightening bolts and applying oil to moving parts is usually sufficient. If you have any questions about maintenance, we will explain it at the time of delivery.
